Emergency Food
Keep extra foods that the family likes and is easy to prepare with a minimum of water.  Try
to avoid foods high in salt or sugar, they create an unnatural thirst.  Eat perishables from
the refrigerator first then the freezer.  Food Bars are great for kits and the desk at work.
They store well in the heat so they do fine in the trunk of your car. They should not be used
in place of real food.

Emergency Water Storage
(shelf life of Water Storage)
All water has bacteria in it, unless it has been purified and sterilized prior to packaging. Bacteria
grows with heat and light. After a few months the bacteria can reach levels that could make you ill. To
ensure safe drinking water and to increase the shelf life of your water storage and to avoid rotating
and dumping your water storage every six  months, plan to pre-treat your emergency water storage
with a product called "Water Preserver" for a 5 yr. storage. If you do not treat your water, the
options are to boil water at a roll for at least 5 minutes. If you don't have natural gas or electricity
following the disaster your other option would be to use Water Purification Tablets. Keep "Water
Purification Tablets" on hand to treat any untreated or questionable water. One tablet will treat one
quart of water.  Never store water in milk type plastic containers (as they are made from breathable
plastic, designed to break down in our landfills ) in the garage because any fumes from vehicles,
paints, solvents, pesticides will contaminate your storage. Do not store any of those type of
containers on concrete as that can leach into your water storage.

bung wrench for water barrels
water storage treatment water preserver
Families: A family of four would need approximately 28 gals. for 1 week, or 56 gals. for 2 weeks. A
minimum of one gallon per person per day for at least seven days, preferably fourteen days for
drinking and hygiene. Store tap water in approved barrels (airtight) and treat with "Water
Preserver" for five year storage.

Schools: To provide each student with 4 oz. of water per waking hours (12 hrs.) for 3 days would
require a school with a population of 500 students to store ten 55 gallon barrels of water. If part of
the student population left school within the first 24 hours that amount could be reduced.

Do not buy or use used barrels. They are cheap, but cannot be recycled as water storage because
you cannot completely remove what was previously stored in the barrel. Be it fruit juice concentrate
or coke syrup, the remaining residue is in the plastic which will result in a fungus growth inside the
barrel.

We do not recommend using bleach. It is not intended for human consumption or designed for long
term water storage. Do not use old bleach bottles as they are not designed for long term
emergency water storage and any bleach residue does not provide any benefits. Bleach is a
solution for those who have
not prepared for an emergency.
